"The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all."

The Cost of Being a Disciple

So today at church in the young adult group “Amped” they talked about the Cost of Being a Disciple.

In….Luke 14:25-35: It talks about the cost of being a Disciple.

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

John 3:16-17:

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Ever heard of someone say, “Salvation is free?” Well where in the bible does it say so? It makes you think doesn’t it?

You individually would have to pay a penalty for the price of your sin.

Romans 3:21:

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.

Romans 6:23:

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord.

Verse 26:

There is great expense to being a disciple.

1. Jesus must be the first priority for you.

2. Do you express more love to your family than you do to God?

3. Would you fight to protect the interest of God?

4. Do you feel a void if you miss time with God?

You have to love Christ more than you love yourself.

1. Means putting God’s desires in front of your own.

2. Willingness to sacrifice personal comfort.

3. Willingness to give up personal time and freedom to spend time doing God’s will.

Luke 9:23:

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

We must take up our own cross and follow.

1. Only by carrying the cross to we become stronger.

2. The cross is a privileged to carry.

3. Carrying the cross identifies us with Christ.

4. The cross symbolizes the death of our old self.

Your drill is no good without the power you need to get plugged in.

We need to carry our cross and get plugged in. That’s the way for us to be disciples of Christ.

"My God is only as big as I let him be and
I am not gonna limit my God with my disbelief
My God has always, always been there for me
and I am not gonna limit my God with uncertainty."
